Castelo - Rhodes island, Greece - a photo on Flickriver

            Το Καστέλο (Παλάτσο) ή Παλάτι των Ιπποτών ή Παλάτι των Μεγάλων Μαγίστρων του Τάγματος του Αγίου Ιωάννη, στο τέλος της οδού Ιπποτών, τεράστιο κτίριο, επιβλητικό, δεσπόζει σ’ όλη την παλιά πόλη. Χτίστηκε το 14ο αι. αλλά καταστράφηκε στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος το 1856 από έκρηξη της πυριτιδαποθήκης που είχαν εγκαταστήσει οι Τούρκοι στα υπόγειά του. Αναστηλώθηκε στα 1939 από τους Ιταλούς, που τήρησαν με απόλυτη πιστότητα τη μορφή του -βρήκαν τα σχέδιά του. Έχει ογδόντα τεράστιες αίθουσες (ξεχωρίζει η μεγάλη σάλα του συμβουλίου), επιπλωμένες με σπάνια κομμάτια ευρωπαϊκού στιλ, 16ου και 17ου αι. Τα δάπεδα είναι στρωμένα με ρωμαϊκά και πρωτοχριστιανικά μωσαϊκά, παρμένα από την Κω. Στην πλακόστρωτη αυλή, με τις αναρίθμητες στοές, μαρμάρινα αγάλματα Ρωμαίων αυτοκρατόρων. 

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes (the Castello). The palace was originally built in the 14th century, but was then completely demolished in 1856 when the gunpowder that the Turks stored in the basement exploded. The palace was restored by the Italians in 1939 during the occupation.
