Santa Maria della Salute Church in Venice (1631-1687) - Architect Baldassare Longhena (Venice about 1597-Venice 1682)

            Pochi sanno che nel luogo destinato alla costruzione della chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute a Venezia, prima che iniziassero i lavori, fu eretta una struttura provvisoria in legno, nella quale fu celebrata una solenne messa di consacrazione e di ringraziamento per la cessata pestilenza, che aveva imperversato dall'estate 1630 fino all'autunno 1631, facendo quasi 50.000 morti. A dirigere le musiche, forse da lui stesso composte, fu CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI. Un testimone riferisce che “…si cantò una solennissima messa, facendo il signor Claudio Monteverdi maestro di cappella… alla Gloria e al Credo unir il canto con le trombe squarciate [tromboni?] con isquisita e meravigliosa armonia”.
I lavori per la costruzione di questo straordinario tempio iniziarono proprio nel 1631 e termineranno nel 1687. Architetto Baldassare Longhena, che volle conferire alla sua creazione l'aspetto di una corona, simbolo della Vergine Maria.
