Kroisos, or Croesus, (stop and show pity), National Archaeological Museum no. 3851, (artificial light, October 2014)

            The Kroisos Kouros was dedicated in about 530 BC. It is fashioned of Parian Marble and is a pretty groovy piece of work, made much groovier by the lovely directional light in the National Archaeological Museum. The base bears the inscription: 

στε̑θι ∶ καὶ οἴκτιρον ∶ Κροίσο παρὰ σε̑μα θανόντος ∶ / ℎόν ποτ’ ἐνὶ προμάχοις ∶ ὄλεσε θο̑ρος ∶ Ἄρες

which means something along the lines of "Stop and show pity beside the marker of Kroisos, dead, whom, when he was in the front ranks, raging Ares destroyed" (borrowed from wikipedia).

The statue is beautifully on the cusp between the archaic and the classical, at least for me.

One evening in October, I walked around the sculpture galleries, one night, after the electric lights went on.
