Newhaven Breakwater - a photo on Flickriver

            
Newhaven lies at the mouth of the River Ouse in East Susex where natural tidal flows cause a shingle spit to accumulate off shore, thereby obstructing the entrance. 

Historically, this river mouth has always been a major outlet for trade and so a breakwater was first constructed way back in the 18th century to prevent the shingle build up. The current breakwater you see here was built in 1890.

While not exactly a wall hanger, I’m drawn to the curve and dimensions of this breakwater structure. The lighthouse at the end is attractive but very small in the scheme of things. Having said that, for what is basically a big solid chunk of industrial concrete, I do find this to be an eye catching image and somewhat of a hybrid between architectural and seascape genre’s. 

The huge Rampion wind farm is being built just off the shoreline in the English Channel and while we were snapping away there was a succession of ferries bringing back the wind farm workers to Newhaven.
