High Five

            Not often I post pictures in successive days. Indeed, you might also notice this is not a typical gallery shot for me. I can explain...

Obviously, I haven’t taken up sky diving and this is a Drone shot. Yes, I own a DJI Phantom 4 Pro Plus, to give it its full name. Now, Drones get a bad press and I can sympathise with people who object to them because of their potential to be intrusive or dangerous. Hovering over someone’s back garden or buzzing a 747 as it comes in to land is not something any sane person would do, not to mention the legality of it.

That said, when I was researching aerial photography, one of the biggest questions I had was regarding image quality and whether a Drone could be used for ‘proper’ Landscape Photography. I searched for examples and it became apparent from the off that, in general, Drone Stills photography is not well received by more conventional toggers. This could be because it is seen as a bit gimmicky or possibly because many images look very much like Drone shots, a bit like this one. This is why I have been conducting a bit of an experiment in recent weeks. 

 For me personally, I had gradually been losing the enthusiasm for taking the same old conventional shots from the same old locations just waiting for a slightly different sky or sea level to make that shot a little bit different from all the rest. The ultimate solution is obviously to change locations more frequently but that’s another story.

Aerial photography had the potential for finding different viewpoints and angles... using the same old locations! So, this brings me on to the reason behind the title of this image. Yes, this is a typical Drone image. I think I would argue that it had some merit because of the abstract shapes the dinghies make in the mud as the tide floods in and out, along with the root like structure created in the mud as the sea water floods in and out.

But the main reason for the title is that the previous five images I have posted have all been Drone shots. Some have been better received than others, as is the case with any picture, but all have had positive feedback which is quite satisfying.  

Some of this may be down to the nature of Flickr and social media in general but hopefully some of it is also down to the quality of the pics themselves.

Aerial photography isn’t an easy option. There are many more things to factor in, not least wind, weather and spacial awareness. The sensor is small and the dynamic range doesn't compare favourably to a modern DSLR. These Drone cameras do not like being pointed at the sun!!

The single biggest benefit is that you can put your Drone camera in places that you just can’t get to with a conventional camera. And as with all photography, its mostly about composition.
