There was a church here by 1154 when it was given, together with land and Dover Beck mill to Thurgarton Priory by Ralph de Bellafargo ‘for the health of the king (Stephen) and the soul of his son.’ Stephen’s son had died in 1153 and Stephen died in 1154. However Eleanor, the queen of Henry II, gave the tithes of Lowdham with others to her newly-founded chapel at Tickhill.

The tower was originally separate from the church, and away from the early 13c chancel and wooden nave which was replaced in stone late 13c and joined to the tower. c1559 the "parishners and wardens doo present that their chauncell is unrepayred. The State Papers of Elizabeth confirmed "A rector was instituted in Lowdham. the chancel and the church were in great decay. The parishioners repor their books supplied in the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI such as communion books had been burnt in the time of Queen Mary"’
Though repairs were probably made, by 1635 the chancel was "defective for want of a beam". .
Restored 3 times in 19c beginning in 1821 when its
"dilapidated walls" were repaired, new slate roofs and the tower butressed. Additional seating was introduced, the vicar reporting that "the parishioners have raised this year among themselves 600£ for the restoration ... but are unable to raise another shilling they require an addition of 150£ ..." (£100 was promised by the church building society) but at the end of 1822, ‘the Parishioners were at variance with the plans & alterations’ and in 1823 the architect reported ‘the position of some few Sectarians in the Parish was so violent against any excess of expense beyond the £100 pounds that for the sake of preserving the peace of its inhabitants the Committee abandoned the improvements altogether.’ Despite all this, the vicar pressed on for the building of his ‘gallery exclusively for the accommodation of poor persons at present unprovided for’.
The 1821 renovations was not a success & extensive restoration by Scott started in 1859, the school being used for services. Still in "a dilapidated state owing to insufficient reparation & the gradual decay of the fabric ... the gallery was removed being "a great annoyance to those sitting under it" ... and the greater part of the open seats and pews is in a wretched state of decay, this restoration cost c £1000 of which £700 was given by Earl Manvers,
c1883 the spire was restored at a cost of £70 and the chancel was "now undergoing repairs". The last of the Victorian alterations were carried out in the mid-1890s when again Earl Manvers coughed up, his attention being drawn to "lack of foundations, and the action of damp to the walls"
in 1953 14 feet was removed temporarily from the spire when the top began to lean and is still not straight.
