KAP Shot 5 of Oldox/Oxton Hill Fort 2013

This is this years revisit to capture the hill fort in its entirety.

This is one of the best preserved hill forts in Nottinghamshire. The Iron Age multi-vallate fort can be found just nne from the village of Oxton near Arnold. It is sub-oval in earthwork and covers around four and half acres. There are visible rig and furrow within the main camp area and this probably obstructs any further surface features. The plough line appear to continue to the nnw beyond the fort. It is mainly of double bank and ditch with a causewayed entrance to the north and an odd entrance to the south-east. Just below this steep incline further to the south is a spring-fed pond which is probably contemporary with the structure. The fort sits on a slope, surrounded by hills to the north and west, making it strange for a defensive fort. I suppose look out posts may have existed on the ridges, but this makes its purpose a little odd. The entrances do not suggest an animal enclosure and adequate water supply for a small camp. The structure of the defenses would suggest an early occupation settlement, but could easily have been re-used over millenia.

The mound to the nw of the fort contained a burial that was removed in antiquity, but there could be others in the area.

It should also be noted that on the day the wind was blowing quite heavy at the Robin Hood hill side and as you move into the fort interior the area is very sheltered from the elements. The large banks protecting the fort on the eastern and southern sides are the areas where it is most exposed to blind sided attack and adequate defenses would have given the occupants good time to prepare.
