Ghostly - a photo on Flickriver

Ghostly

            There are many legendary figures laid to rest at Melrose Abbey, including  Michael Scott (d.c.1236), a Medieval Scholar who was born in Melrose in the late 12th century. He was buried there along with his powerful “book of spells”. 

According to the stories collected by Sir Walter Scott, many ghostly tales were told in the Borders area about Michael Scott. For example, he came to be known as a wizard who split the Eildon Hills in three.

In reality, he was an astrologer, astronomer, an alchemist and he also studied medicine. All these areas of study were considered to be equal and legitimate academic pursuits at the time. In addition, he knew Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic. He translated the work of Aristotle from Arabic into Latin while he studied at the great library of the Moors in Toledo, Spain.

But when you see Melrose Abbey lit up at night, it is easy to begin to believe that he haunts the place still, as it was told in the ancient oral traditions of the Borders.
