Binturong

            Binturong or Bearcat in the Rimba, a part of Burgers Zoo (Arnhem, the Netherlands) with plants and animals from the Southeast Asian rainforest. Rimba is Malay for tropical rainforest.
The Binturong or Bearcat (Arctictis binturong), also known as the Malay Civet Cat and Asian or Palawan Bearcat, lives in Southeast Asia in dense forests from northeast India (Himalayas) through Thailand,  Indo-China and Malaysia to Indonesia and the Philippines.
It is neither a bear or a cat, but a species of the family Viverridae, which includes the civets and genets. 
The Binturong has long, shaggy hair, tufted ears, and a long bushy prehensile tail. 
The colour generally is black to reddish or grayish with a sprinkling of whitish hairs. The head - body length is 60 to 90 cm and the tail is 55 to 90 cm. 
The long tail is very strong and can even hold the 9 to 14 kg of weight while hanging head-down in a branch. The binturong also uses its tail to communicate as well as climbing.
The binturong climbs trees and leaps from branch to branch, with the binturong using its tail and claws to cling on. It apparently feeds mainly on fruit but also takes eggs and small animals.
In some areas it is tamed and is reported to make an affectionate pet.

Beermarter of bintoerong in de Rimba, een deel van Burgers Zoo in Arnhem met planten en dieren uit het zuid-oost Aziatisch regenwoud. Rimba is het Maleisische woord voor tropisch regenwoud.
De beermarter of bintoerong (Arctictis binturong) is geen beer of marter, maar een civetkatachtige (Viverridae) uit de dichte regenwouden van zuidoost Azië. Globaal van noordoost India (Himalaya) via Thailand, Indochina en Maleisië tot op verschillende eilanden van Indonesië en de Filippijnen.
De beermarter heeft een lange, ruige, zwarte vacht, soms roodachtig bruin. De haarpunten zijn soms wit of geel, waardoor de dieren een gelige of grijzige waas kunnen hebben. Op de oren zitten lange, zwarte pluimpjes. De staart is lang en stevig gespierd, het puntje is zeer beweeglijk en kan dienen als grijpstaart. De hoofdbody lengte is 60 tot 90 cm lang en de staart is 55 tot 90 cm. Beermarters worden 9 tot 14 kg zwaar. Vrouwtjes worden iets groter dan mannetjes. 
De beermarter maakt ook gebruik van zijn beweeglijke staart om te communiceren en te klimmen.
Hij leeft vooral in bomen en springt van tak naar tak, die hij zijn staart en klauwen vastgrijpt. 
Beermarters zijn voornamelijk 's-avonds en 's-nachts actief; overdag rusten ze opgerold op een boomtak of in een boomholte. 
Beermarters zijn omnivoren: ze eten behalve vruchten (voornamelijk bessen) ook scheuten, bladeren, kadavers, insecten, eieren en knaagdieren. Vogels worden met veren en al gegeten.
In sommige gebieden worden ze getemd en als een aanhankelijk huisdier gehouden.
