The heart of a poppy - a photo on Flickriver

            Papaver, usually called poppy, is a genus of 70 à 100 species of frost-tolerant annual flowering plants native to temperate and cold regions of Eurasia, Africa and North America. It is the type genus of the poppy family (Papaveraceae).
Poppies are herbaceous plants, often grown for their colourful flowers in red, pink, orange, yellow, or lilac. Poppies are in full bloom late spring to early summer.
One species of poppy (Papaver somniferum), produces edible seeds, and is also the source of the crude drug opium which contains powerful medicinal alkaloids such as morphine and has been used since ancient times as an analgesic and narcotic medicinal and recreational drugs. 
Following the trench warfare which took place in the poppy fields of Flanders (Belgium), during the 1st World War, poppies have become a symbol of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime.

De klaproos of papaver is een geslacht van bloeiende planten. 
De klaproos wordt in sommige streken ook kollenbloem (toverkol of kol = heks) genoemd.
Het geslacht Papaver kent wereldwijd circa 70 soorten. 
In Nederland kennen we 5 in het wild voorkomende soorten.
Een bekende soort, die ook als sierplant wordt gehouden, is de slaapbol (Papaver somniferum), waaruit opium gewonnen wordt. 
De papaver die in Nederland groeit, komt vooral voor op droge zanderige grond die kort geleden omgewoeld is, zoals op spoordijken of op opgespoten zandvlaktes. De zaden van de klaproos behouden onder de grond erg lang hun kiemkracht en ontkiemen als ze, soms na jaren, weer aan de oppervlakte komen. De klaproos is dan ook een echte pioniersplant. 
Klaprozen zijn met name in het Verenigd Koninkrijk het symbool van de Eerste Wereldoorlog omdat ze op de slagvelden in Vlaanderen uitbundig bloeiden. Op Remembrance Day, de dodenherdenking van het Gemenebest, worden klaprooskransen gelegd, geen echte overigens, omdat de bloemblaadjes zeer snel uitvallen.
