            Pont Saint-Bénézet

Wenn man die Altstadt verlässt und sich den Uferböschungen zuwendet, gelangt man zur berühmten steinernen Brücke von Avignon, der Pont Saint-Bénézet. Von ihren zweiundzwanzig Brückenbogen, die im 14. Jahrhundert über die Rhône gebaut wurden, hielten der Flut von 1668 nur vier Bogen stand, so dass die Brücke heute im Fluss endet. Das Bauwerk, das eine erstmals im 12. Jahrhundert errichtete und mehrfach erneuerte Holzkonstruktion ersetzte, ist durch das Volkslied Sur le pont d’Avignon (dt. Auf der Brück' von Avignon) bekannt geworden. Der Ursprung dieses Liedes, das ursprünglich Sous (dt. unter) le pont d'Avignon hieß, liegt in der Zeit, als die Brücke noch bis auf die Île de la Barthelasse führte: Damals gab es dort ein Volksfest, das u. a. unter den Brückenbögen stattfand.
