Body Snatched

            Unidentified moth species infested by Cordyceps - Amazonas department, Colombia

Cordyceps is pretty amazing and gruesome.  It is a fungus that targets various arthropods and takes over their bodies.  The final stage, which you see here, is when the insect finally dies with most of its tissues replaced by the fungus' mycelium and then fruiting bodies sprout from the deceased insect.  These fruiting bodies release spores which will then disperse and infect new hosts and the cycle repeats itself.   There are hundreds of species many of which target specific types of arthropods ranging from spiders to ants to moths and everything in between.  The fruiting bodies take a variety of forms as well with some really interesting structures among them.
