Palace In Wonderland - a photo on Flickriver

            We’re all mad here.  I’m mad. You’re mad, as you must be... or you wouldn’t have come here.

Alice says you wouldn’t recognize Wonderland anymore.  The Palace’s once beautiful gardens have been turned into a murky industrial wasteland of smoke spewing factories.  The people have gone crazy for unsustainables.   The factories that produce the unsustainables are slowly destroying the gardens and are encroaching on the palace itself just to keep up with the demand.  The people of Wonderland are too busy consuming unsustainables to take notice of the changes.  It seems as though only Alice can see the damage that is being done.  But what can she do to save Wonderland this time?
The title “Palace In Wonderland” came first and the final concept evolved over a four year period.  I wanted to build an art piece that would bring awareness to the challenges that the world is facing with environmental change.  The idea came to me when I heard that traces of pollution had been found in the North Pole where there were no human inhabitants.  By extension I figured that some of our fantasy worlds such as Wonderland might also be affected by pollution.  
The model required over 500 individual mini factories to make up the industrial waste zone around the palace.  The hardest part of the creation was to design the palace.  The palace is not based on any place or artwork I have seen.  The concept relies on the contrast between the classical architectural styling of wonderland and the brutal nature of the black and dark grey factories.  Palace in Wonderland was built over a 6 month period and is my largest installation to date.
