A Provincial Outline as a Portal (Canyonlands National Park)

When I'd walked through this portal on the way out, the outline looked as any non-distinct outline anyone might come across. On the way back, very different! Maybe it's because of my travels to Canada over the past few years or just the distinct look that Quebec makes with Newfoundland and Labrador as a landmass with the surrounding ocean and bay. That's what I could easily identify. So I used that as a portal to capture a look beyond to mesas and other formations. The issue I could easily see was one of metering. Nearby was a rock formation very much in shadows while beyond was one caught in light from the early afternoon sun. In my mind, I wanted to replicate something I'd seen on the 500x site (500px.com/photo/235687343/tre-cimes-by-etienne-ruff), but how to bring something like that out? In the end, I decided to use the in-camera flash to brighten that nearby area while exposing for the ambient light beyond with the mesa. I was later able to bring out the colors and details in the shadowed area while working in Capture NX2 for the final image.
