Meet Miss Kara aka Medi Junior - Please zoom in ;-)

After mentioning how many losses were suffered by the smaller songbirds on and around my terrace so far this spring, I decided I needed to celebrate the few young ones which did make it up to now.

None of the smaller songbirds which nest in the hedges or near the ground have made it to adulthood to date, though I believe I still saw one juvenile Blackbird (Subby Junior) out back a few days ago.

And, my resident Robin Rudy is also busy taking away fat ball droppings again. So, I am cautiously hopeful that I get to meet his second brood of the year in the coming weeks.

The two juvenile Long-Tailed Tit birds are still floating around. I just saw the first Great Tit baby in the back of my terrace wayfaring tree this morning, possibly Ziggy Junior! This past week, my darling Coal Tit Tanni was visiting my terrace with his bride while she was doing the begging ritual and he was then taking away goodies to their young somewhere.

For those of you who are wondering whatever happened to my resident Blue Tit General Rosie's nesting attempt on my terrace, that is quite the dramatic tale. Yet again. This spring, the roaming cats from the neighbor were off the hook. The culprit rhymes with the word cats, though. More about that down the road...

Rosie ended up having to abandon the luxury condo she had invested in for 4 weeks all throughout March and where she had already laid her first two eggs. The night after the hostile take--over of my terrace the very beginning of April, Rosie and her hubby fled to safety after I got the worst scolding of my life by the tiny General. Last year, it was Mr. Rosie who gave me hell for a good 4 weeks every time he saw me. This time, it was his wife. But only for one day...

Rosie being none other than General Rosie Bonaparte and not being known for ever giving up or surrendering, she simply ended up building a nest somewhere else. Both she and Mr. Rosie then introduced her two little ones to my terrace the beginning of June. As you can all imagine, I basically threw them the biggest homecoming party ever!

I saw them all together for about two days and I do believe her very self-assured son survived. I nicknamed him Rambo because of his amazing martial arts moves ;-) He totally got into it with the kids of Medi at and around the fat ball feeder... And then, with just about everyone else. He even took on my various resident robins!

So far, he has not gone after my person. But, nothing would surprise me with him. Talk about a chick with an attitude. Most definitely his mother's son and he does the mighty General proud. But, I have no really great picture of him in action...

Interestingly enough, General Rosie herself has completely chilled out and become very mellow. I think she has retired her title of General for the rest of this year. She seemed so happy and relieved that it all worked out in the end, as was I. The super laid-back California surfer dude Mr, Rosie was also finally pulling his weight and looking after their two kids for a few days!

Anyways, back to the above image ;-) Exactly one year ago, the super sweet and adorable Eurasian Blue Tit whom I nicknamed Medi ((pronounced Meh-di from the word meditation), brought her two darling juvenile daughters (Goldie and Dainty) to my terrace the middle of June 2016. Both of those cuties then stayed glued to the fat ball feeder for the duration of the summer ;-)

Medi then returned to my terrace during the first part of May of this year in order to make sure that everything was in order to her new kids. Just like last year, she was already in her molt. She definitely has the cutest and fluffiest molt ever, as you can see in my upload of her from a few weeks ago: www.flickr.com/photos/138493762@N02/34886480485/in/datepo...

This time, she also had two kids with her: one boy and one girl. I named him Cookie (long story) and his rather dainty sister I call Kara. In the beginning, Kara's big brother looked after his little sister and fought off any potential fat ball interlopers aka the Great Tits. By the time I took this image of his sister, he was practicing his karate skills on everyone who dared glance in the direction of the feeder.

Poor Kara, also got to battle it out with her brother though it was all very playful and no one was harmed in the process. On the other hand, Kara has managed to stay true to her Buddha Bird nature and I thought the above image captured her sweetness well ;-) I was sitting about one meter below her when I took this shot of her in the wayfaring tree overhanging my terrace, while she was finishing nibbling on a crushed organic peanut.

Mostly, Kara prefers surfing down the wayfaring leaves while scooping up all the insects she can muster. She also loves scraping the crawlies off the bark. The small songbirds are the most effective insect repellant ever.

Songbirds are also the best friend of a gardener as they clear off the lice from the rose leaves and also gobble up all the insects which damage the flowers and plants. The blackbirds love the garden snails as do the hedgehogs. So, no need to ever use any toxic sprays, slug pellets or pesticides as all of those things are deadly to the songbirds and other wildlife besides poisoning our own environment and groundwater.

To be fair, both of Medi's kids were all peace and love when they first came to my terrace. But, both the Great Tit males and females went into attack mode when they turned up so the poor little angels learned quickly that they are not supposed to be friends with the Great Tits. This prejudice seems to be passed down from each generation to the next one...

In general, there is no love lost between the Great Tit birds and the tiny Blue Tit ones. Though, back in 2015 there was one pretty big BT and one smaller GT who were always together everywhere and I gather they were either star-crossed lovers or more likely, siblings who had grown up together as sometimes the Great Tits will take over a nest of the Blue Tits along with their eggs and then simply raise all of the offspring as their own after chasing the actual BT parents off the premises.

Rosie proper is part of the colorful entourage of the crested tit Maxine in my upcoming picture book series, "Flaushi the Buddha Jay." The series is based on my very special and completely wild Eurasian jay Flaushi and all of his friends on and around my enchanted terrace.

All the other songbirds assume Rosie is not so smart as she always seems to be staring off into space. But, she is actually meditating and quite the enlightened little being.

The real-life Rosie will spend up to 10 minutes in one spot, contemplating the world. It is the cutest thing to watch. Rosie also loves posing for me and my camera when I am outside on my enchanted terrace.
