Eumorpha labruscae - Gaudy Sphinx (Linnaeus, 1758)

Description: Eumorpha labruscae is a moth in the order Lepidoptera, superfamily Bombycoidea, family Sphingidae, subfamily Macroglossinae and tribe Philampelini. They deposit their eggs on the leaves of their host plants which include Vitis vinifera, Chromolaena odorata ("christmasbush"), Cissus sicyoides, Eupatorium odoratum, Ludwigia sp., Magnolia sp, Cissus incisa, Cissus verticillata, Cissus pseudosicyoides, Cissus alata and Parthenocissus sp.. The caterpillars pupate after burrowing underground. After the pupa stage is coming to an end, it surfaces and eclodes. The adult starts pumping fluids through the wings to ready them for flight. Their caterpillars mimic snakes in a sophisticated defensive mechanism, but are 100% harmless. The moth feeds on the nectar of various flowers including Asystasia gangetica ("coromandel" / "chinese violet" / "creeping foxglove") during dusk. Two subspecies of this Lepidoptera are recorded: Eumorpha labruscae labruscae and Eumorpha labruscae yupanquii (Kernbach, 1962) (Galapagos Islands).

Feeding type: Larvae are poliphytophagous; refer to the text above for the host plants. At night, the moth feeds on the nectar of many flowers, including Asystasia gangetica.
