Breaking free - a photo on Flickriver

Breaking free

            It's been a big-snow winter for us this year and, where there used to be bushes and shrubs, rocks and vegetation, the landscape is now a wonderful, white softness, full of little hillocks sculpted by the forms beneath and combined with snow, sun and wind.  When you throw late afternoon light into the equation you get all kinds of fantastic shapes that only nature can create.  

This small fir seedling was completely enshrouded with a layer of white, but somehow it managed to pop out a breathing space and stretch its little branches up and out while still hanging on to a snow cap.  The afternoon sun shone right through, lighting up the crystals and showing off translucent textures in the sculpted snow.
