SKYFALL - a photo on Flickriver

SKYFALL

            Glen Etive, Scotland

As an avid cinema going movie fan I just loved this scene from the film. The unveiling of the legendary DB5 in a back street garage in London and the drive north through the heartland of England and Scotland to Bond's ancestral home of Skyfall, all to the accompaniment of Monty Norman's iconic Bond theme. The scene where Bond and 'M' stand in front of the DB5 looking down the glen has everything. The best Bond in Daniel Craig, the best M in Judi Dench and the iconic DB5 from Goldfinger - what better way to pay homage to 50 years of Bond.

However, film locations are not always what they seem and I would bet most people would guess this as being the main route through the heart of Glencoe. It is in fact the unnamed single track road that leads to Dalness and Gualachulain. I grant you this is not the best image of Glen Etive that you'll see, but it is the viewpoint of the camera where Bond parks the BD5 (left side) and stands with M looking down the misty Glen. Unfortunately, many other tourists/film buffs have since visited this spot to re-inact the scene and the grass verge is somewhat damaged now to the dismay of the park authorities 

More alarmingly though is what the people from Black Rock cottage told us... during the summer months it is quite easy to get stuck in a convoy down this road. Coaches full of Chinese tourists regularly drive down this road except there are no turning circles and the passing points not designed for coaches so you could just be forced to drive the full length... and it's a dead end! At the time I found that hard to believe, but having done over a thousand miles this holiday, I've seen some sights and now I wouldn't put it past "certain tourists". Besides, it was the locals that told us, so who are we to disagree.
