Mohamed, Entrepreneur - a photo on Flickriver

            October 8, 2015 - Esna (Egypt). Mohamed Hassan, 17, saw a problem in his rural farming community in southern Egypt. Where he lives, many small-scale farmers use pesticides but they do not use safety precautions or wear protective clothing when spraying, resulting in many injuries and illnesses to themselves and their family members. Mohamed, however, had just the solution. He attends an agricultural technical high school -- one of 10 across southern Egypt supported by USAID -- where hes learned how to safely spray crops, using special clothing and equipment to prevent any chemical exposure to himself or others. When USAID sponsored an entrepreneurship competition at his high school in 2015, Mohamed worked with his teacher to come up with a business plan for this solution. Among 200 proposals received, Mohamed was one of 92 students to win nearly $200 in startup capital. And with that, Mohamed became a successful business owner, not only making enough money to help his parents support the family but also preventing many injuries and potential illnesses in his community. USAID supports technical high school education in Egypt and encourages entrepreneurship as part of a strategy to boost economic growth by increasing productivity and employability of Egypts youth.
