St Fagans Castle - interior - a photo on Flickriver

A 13th Century castle originally occupied this site which had become ruinous. Dr John Gibbon acquired the land and construction of this Elizabethan Manor House was started in 1580. The castle was then owned for some time by William Herbert 3rd Earl of Pembroke before being sold to Sir Edward Lewis of the Fan Caerphilly, Sheriff of Glamorgan. The building was extensively remodelled by Sir Edward and Lady Blanche, bearing a striking resemblance to their Van Mansion at Caerphilly. The castle came into the family of the Earls of Plymouth by marriage in 1730.

Noticeably, this building bears little resemblance on the whole to a castle and is not fortified so the title castle presumably harks back to the medieval structure that originally stood here.

In 1946 the castle, along with 18 acres of land, was donated to the Nation by the Earl of Plymouth. The castle and this land form the nucleus of St Fagans Museum.
