Lighten the light maar dan anders - a photo on Flickriver

HOH Architecten voegt als enige deelnemer aan het festival geen licht toe aan de stad, maar maakt juist gebruik van wat al voorhanden is: het licht van straatlantaarns. Drie lantaarns langs de Herengracht – twee kroonlantaarns (vanaf 1883 toegepast) en één Ritterlantaarn (een eenvoudiger model uit 1898) – zijn aan de waterkant op een podium geplaatst. Aan de straatkant worden ze omlijst door een scherm dat ’s avonds de stralende lichtbron nog eens extra benadrukt.

De straatlantaarns worden zo door de architecten verheven tot bijzondere museumobjecten, die de moeite waard zijn om aandachtig te bekijken. Dat geldt ook voor de kleur en intensiteit van het licht zelf. De moderne ledlampen in de kroonlantaarns wekken bijvoorbeeld een koude, afstandelijke indruk, terwijl natriumlicht van de Ritterlantaarn een ouderwets maar warm karakter heeft. De verlichting waardoor we op straat na zonsondergang altijd worden omgeven, is daarmee bepalend voor de sfeer in de stad: gezellige, veilige of onguur.

Het ontwerp van HOH Architecten werkt als een kijkwijzer en stelt je de vraag: ben jij je bewust van de aanwezigheid van dit essentiële licht, of is het vanzelfsprekend voor je? Straatverlichting, al sinds de 17 e eeuw een structureel onderdeel van de stad, wordt zo weer even heel bijzonder.

Lighten the light

HOH Architects is the only festival participant that does not add light to the city, but makes use of what is already available: the light of streetlights. Three historical streetlights along the Herengracht – two crown lanterns (from 1883 onwards) and one Ritter lantern (a simpler model from 1898) – are placed on a pedestal on the waterfront. On the street side a screen that emphasizes the radiant light source even more in the evening frames them.

The architects highlight the streetlights and elevate them to museum objects worth looking at. This also applies to the colour and intensity of the light itself. The modern LED lights in the crown lanterns, for example, create a cold, distant impression, while sodium light from the Ritter lantern has an old- fashioned but warm character. The lighting that always surrounds us on the street is therefore crucial for the atmosphere in the city: cozy, safe or unpleasant.

HOH Architects asks you the question: are you aware of the presence of this essential light, or do you consider it a given? Street lighting, which has been a structural part of the city since the 17th century, becomes very special again.
