Vision - a photo on Flickriver

Vision

            I have been struggling lately; trying to change and redefine my wildlife photography. I'm trying to move away from portrait shots, and more towards images that have an important conservation message or images of animals in interesting light/environment/interactions. 

I have been talking to a good friend of mine, Matt Peel, about an idea I've had for a while. We often photograph ducks above water, but not below...which is odd as diving ducks spend so much of their life underwater!

 This past weekend, we finally decided on trying it out. I slipped into the 50 degree water with my camera, waiting for the flock of canvasbacks and bluebills to approach. 15 minutes later, about 13 minutes after I lost all feeling and control of my fingers, the divers finally gathered the courage to feed close to my camera dome. Over the next 5 minutes, I had bluebills and cans bumping into my camera and arms in their never-ending search for food. 

This attempt was far from perfect, but I learned a lot of good things and was able to follow through on a vision I had of a not-often-seen image. I can't wait to go back and improve on it. I hope this image is as exciting and refreshing for you as it was for me!
