Apollo de Belvedere and the Drottningholm Castle Theatre

The Drottningholms Castle Theatre, Drottningholmsteatern, on the island of Lovön outside Stockholm is a unique 18th centrury theatre – the one best preserved in the world – with an advanced machinery enabling changes of decor with open curtain. The original decors are now copied and preserved.

In addition, the theatre has trap doors, moving waves, light, wind and thunder machinery, which help create atmosphere. The stage remains one of the country's deepest, 20 m, although by modern standards it’s unusually narrow for its depth.

Every summer a number of opera and music performances are given that always attract large crowds. The repertoire is the opera and ballet from the 1600s and 1700s. The performances are nowadays usually played with period instruments such as woodwind instruments without valves and string instruments of baroque type. During the 2014 season two Mozart operas were played, Mitridate and Idomeneo. The latter is a co-production with the Royal Opera. Since 2013, the Drottningholm Palace Theatre also collaborates with the Baltic Sea Festival.

Like the next-door Drottningholm Palace and the surrounding castle park, the Drottningholm Castle Theatre has a place on the Unesco World Heritage List.

Drottningholms Slottsteater, Drottningholmsteatern, i Drottningholms slottsområde på Lovön utanför Stockholm är en unik 1700-talsteater - den bäst bevarade i världen - med ett avancerat maskineri som möjliggör dekorväxlingar inför öppen ridå. Förutom de två större operaproduktionerna varje säsong arrangerar teatern konserter, solistframträdanden, utställningar, seminarier, visningar, barn- och familjeföreställningar med mera, inom programverksamheten Esprit!

Teaterchef och konstnärlig ledare är sedan hösten 2013 Sofi Lerström, teaterns vd från våren 2011. Teatern har även ett konstnärligt råd bestående av Johannes Öhman, konstnärlig rådgivare dans, och Maria Lindal, musikalisk ledare. Till rådet knyts även en Artist in Residence som utses varje år, och för 2014 är det den amerikanska dirigenten David Stern.

Konstnärlig ledare under åren 2007-2013 var den brittiske dirigenten, och professor på Operahögskolan, Mark Tatlow. Bland tidigare konstnärliga ledare märks Arnold Östman, Elisabeth Söderström och Per-Erik Öhrn. Teatern ingår i det nordiska avsnittet av Europavägen historiska teatrar. Drottningholms Slottsteater är tillsammans med Drottningholms slott och den omgivande slottsparken upptaget på Unescos världsarvslista.
