Agios Stefanos Klooster/monastery - a photo on Flickriver

Het klooster Agios Stefanos
Uit een (nu verdwenen) inscriptie blijkt dat dit klooster in 1192 werd gesticht, en dat een zekere Jeremiah de eerste prior van de ermitage was. In 1333 kwam de Byzantijnse keizer Andronicus III Paleologus (1328-1341) naar Thessalië, en werd gastvrij ontvangen in dit klooster, dat sindsdien de titel keizerlijk mag voeren. Andronicus deed ook grote schenkingen aan de abt en zijn monniken. In 1350 werd de kapel van de Heilige Stephanus gebouwd, op initiatief van Antonius Cantacuzenus, een verwant van de Servische tsaar Symeon Uros en lid van de Byzantijnse adellijke familie der Cantacuzeni. Aan het einde van de 14e eeuw deden de Walachijse prins Vladislav en zijn neef Vornikos Dragoumaris belangrijke schenkingen (o.a. kostbare relikwieën, grondbezit in Roemenië) en andere weldaden aan het klooster, en in 1545 verklaarde de toenmalige Patriarch van Constantinopel het autonoom en slechts direct afhankelijk van zijn patriarchaat. Het imposante katholikon, gewijd aan de Heilige Charalampos, dateert pas uit 1798 en bezit stukken houtwerkversiering. In 1888 telde het rijke klooster nog 31 monniken, maar in 1960 was het vrijwel verlaten. Het werd zwaar beschadigd door brand tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, en communistische partizanen hebben tijdens de burgeroorlog in 1949 het gezicht van de stichter op een van de fresco's onherstelbaar beschadigd. In 1961 werd het omgezet in een nonnenklooster (daar waar vrouwen eertijds gewoon geen toegang tot de Meteora hadden!). De nonnen herstelden niet alleen de schade, ze slaagden er ook in het klooster weer een bloeiend bestaan te schenken. Nog steeds worden hier de Byzantijnse iconenkunst en muziek op traditionele wijze beoefend, met opmerkelijke resultaten.

De refter (nu als schatkamer ingericht) getuigt van de vroegere rijkdom van het klooster: kostbare handschriften, iconen, houtsnijwerk, zilveren vaatwerk en reliquiaria (o.a. de in zilver gevatte schedel van de schutspatroon Charalampos). Opmerkelijk is wel dat het klooster in vogelvlucht het dichtst bij het nabije Kalambaka ligt, terwijl het er over de weg het verst van af ligt.

The monastery Agios Stefanos
A (now defunct) inscription reveals that this monastery was founded in 1192, and that a certain Jeremiah was the first prior of the hermitage. In 1333 the Byzantine emperor Andronicus III came Paleologus (1328-1341) to Thessaly, and was warmly welcomed in this monastery that since then may use the title emperor. Andronicus also made large donations to the abbot and his monks. In 1350 the chapel of St. Stephen was built on the initiative of Anthony Cantacuzenus, a relative of the Serbian Tsar Symeon Uros and a member of the Byzantine noble family of Cantacuzeni. At the end of the 14th century Wallachian prince Vladislav and his cousin Vornikos Dragoumaris did important donations (including precious relics, landed in Romania) and other benefits to the monastery, and in 1545 the then Patriarch of Constantinople declared the autonomous and only directly dependent his patriarchate. The imposing katholikon, dedicated to Saint Charalampos, only dates back to 1798 and holds pieces woodwork trim. In 1888 the wealthy monastery had 31 more monks, but in 1960 it was virtually deserted. It was severely damaged by fire during the Second World War and communist partisans during the civil war in 1949, the face of the founder of one of the frescoes damaged beyond repair. In 1961 it was converted into a nunnery (where women formerly simply had no access to Meteora!). The nuns not only repaired the damage, they also succeeded in the monastery to pay flourished. Still be here Byzantine icon art and music practiced in the traditional way, with remarkable results.

The refectory (now a treasure trove) bears witness to the former wealth of the monastery: precious manuscripts, icons, wood carvings, silver vessels and reliquaries (inter alia in the summary silver skull of the patron saint Charalampos). Remarkably, the monastery in a nutshell is the closest to the near Kalambaka, while it is the farthest from down the road.
